A 37-year-old British man is due to appear before the Paphos District Court on Monday to enter a plea to charges linked to the death of his three-year-old son.
His defence lawyer, Alexandros Alexandrou, is expected to request the lifting of the bail restrictions imposed on his client so he can travel to the UK to attend his son’s funeral.
The child died after falling from a hotel window in Paphos.
Defence seeks temporary travel permission
The defendant appeared before the Paphos District Court last Friday in an emotional hearing, accompanied by his parents and his new defence lawyer.
During the proceedings, his previous lawyer withdrew from the case, citing differences over the handling of the defence. Alexandrou subsequently took over legal representation.
At the time, the defence requested that the accused not be asked to enter a plea until receiving the prosecution’s case file. The lawyer also informed the court of his intention to seek permission for the 37-year-old to travel to Britain for the funeral.
The prosecution said the case file would be provided to the defence, while any request to allow the defendant to leave Cyprus would require instructions from the Attorney General.
Strict bail conditions remain in place
The 37-year-old faces a charge of causing death through a reckless, negligent or dangerous act in connection with the death of his son.
Pending the start of his trial, he remains free under strict bail conditions, including:
- A €20,000 financial guarantee.
- Placement on Cyprus’ stop list, preventing him from leaving the country.
- Surrender of all travel documents.
- Weekly reporting to Paphos Central Police Station.
- A ban on crossing checkpoints.
- An obligation to notify police of his residential address.
According to reports, the three-year-old’s body has been returned to England, while the man’s wife and their five-year-old daughter have already travelled back to Britain.
Attorney General authorised prosecution
The Attorney General ordered criminal proceedings after reviewing the evidence gathered during the police investigation into the child’s death.
The court is expected to consider both the defendant’s plea and the defence application to temporarily lift his travel restrictions.
