Police have arrested the father of a boy who was 13-year-old seriously injured in a car accident in Athienou, after the child was found to have been driving a vehicle registered to the 40-year-old man.
According to the police, the father is both the owner of the vehicle and the person responsible for its custody. He was arrested under a court warrant to assist investigations into how the 13-year-old seriously injured came to be driving the car.
The accident occurred on Sunday morning at around 10.30am, when the vehicle the teenager was driving on a rural road in Athienou veered off course and overturned in a nearby field. The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
The boy was initially taken to Larnaca General Hospital before being transferred to Makarios Hospital in Nicosia for further treatment. Police said on Monday that he remained in a serious but stable condition.
Investigations are ongoing.
13-year-old in serious condition
A 13-year-old boy continues to be treated in serious but stable condition at Makarios Children’s Hospital following a single-vehicle rollover on a dirt road near Athienou on Saturday morning.
Police spokesman Byron Byronos told RIK that the teenager suffered a head injury in the accident.
The boy was driving alone when he lost control after accelerating too fast for the rural track. The car veered off the road, ploughed through eight olive trees and came to rest in an adjoining field.
The vehicle belongs to the boy’s father, who was brought in for questioning on Saturday evening. He was formally charged in writing and released pending further inquiries.
Authorities are examining exactly how the underage boy gained access to the keys and was allowed to drive the car.
