Fatal road accident in Nicosia: Was someone in the boot?

Date:

Police are investigating the possibility that someone was in the boot of the car involved in the fatal accident that claimed the life of 20-year-old Irini Kontoyorgou in Nicosia.

According to sources, testimony obtained during the investigation suggests that a person might have been in the vehicle’s boot.

Until now, police have been treating the case as an accident involving a driver, a front-seat passenger, and five individuals in the rear seats.

Today, the legally mandated post-mortem will be conducted on the 20-year-old’s body to determine the exact cause of death.

Initial evidence indicates that at around 3:10 AM, a rental car driven by a 20-year-old on Archangel Michael Avenue in Engomi, with another 20-year-old as a front-seat passenger and five others (three men and two women aged 28, 21, 20, and two 20-year-olds) in the back seats, veered off course for reasons under investigation. The vehicle struck the wall of a nearby building and a traffic sign before coming to a stop.

The collision injured the 20-year-old front-seat passenger and two of the 20-year-old women in the back. They were taken by ambulance to Nicosia General Hospital, where the doctor on duty confirmed the death of one of the 20-year-olds.

The 20-year-old male passenger sustained an elbow fracture and was discharged after receiving first aid, while the second 20-year-old woman was kept for further examination.

The driver of the vehicle underwent a final alcohol test, which showed a reading of 55 μg%, exceeding the legal limit of 9 μg%.

A court warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was detained to assist with the investigation.

Nicosia Traffic Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
