The Limassol District Court has issued a five-day remand order against a 41-year-old man in connection with Thursday night’s fatal accident in Limassol, which claimed the life of 51-year-old motorcyclist Georgios Georgiou. Police said the suspect was driving under the influence of alcohol and without a valid driving licence or vehicle insurance.
According to Limassol Traffic Police chief Marios Charalambous, the fatal crash occurred at around 8:30 p.m. when the van driver veered into the opposite lane and collided with Georgiou’s motorcycle on the Moni overpass.
“The motorcyclist was seriously injured and taken by ambulance to Limassol General Hospital, where, despite doctors’ efforts, he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later,” Charalambous said.
Police added that the driver tested positive for alcohol, with a reading of 48mg% compared to the legal limit of 22mg%. He also did not hold a Cypriot driving licence and was driving without insurance.
State pathologist Angeliki Papetta carried out a post-mortem examination on Friday, confirming the victim’s cause of death as haemorrhagic shock resulting from multiple injuries. Georgiou had been wearing a protective helmet at the time of the crash.
The 41-year-old suspect was arrested and appeared before the Limassol District Court, which ordered his five-day detention on charges of causing death by negligence, driving under the influence, and driving without a licence and insurance.
According to Limassol Traffic Police, this is the 14th road death recorded in the city and district so far in 2025 — matching the number of fatal collisions that have occurred this year.
