A protest is set to take place on Thursday at the Rizoelia roundabout in Larnaca, as livestock producers express opposition to the ongoing mass culling of animals linked to a foot and mouth outbreak.
Police will be present in the area to ensure the demonstration does not disrupt the arrival of EU leaders attending the informal EU Council in Ayia Napa.
The protest follows a meeting between representatives of the livestock sector and the Agriculture Ministry’s permanent secretary, Andreas Gregoriou, which farmers said did not produce the expected results.
Farmers are calling for an end to mass culling in cases where only a small number of infections have been identified.
Organisers said dissatisfied farmers from all districts will gather at 11 am, partially blocking the roundabout and closing one lane in each direction, with traffic diverted accordingly.
Police security measures in place
Police spokesman Vyron Vyronos said preparations have already been made to manage the farmers’ protest while ensuring that EU presidency events proceed smoothly.
Authorities stressed they are ready to intervene if necessary to prevent any disruption to the informal EU Council in Ayia Napa, where EU leaders are expected to arrive during the day.
Traffic management and public impact
The farmers’ protest is expected to cause limited traffic disruption, with one lane in each direction remaining open.
Farmers said their intention is not to inconvenience the public but to highlight their concerns over disease control measures and the impact on livestock farmers.
The protest reflects broader tensions in Cyprus’ agricultural sector over culling policies, compensation, and disease management strategies.
Farmers continue to demand adjustments to current practices, while authorities maintain that measures are necessary to control the outbreak and protect animal health.
