Livestock protests in Cyprus are being threatened by members of the newly formed association “Voice of Farmers”, who say they are prepared to launch dynamic mobilisations if the culling of animals is not stopped.
The warning comes even if satisfactory compensation is provided for losses linked to foot-and-mouth disease measures.
Farmers question EU protocols and compensation
Speaking to state broadcaster, spokesperson Stella Petrou said farmers are referring to alternative European protocols, which she claimed include “loopholes” that allow for other solutions beyond mass culling.
She added that no specific details or figures have yet been provided regarding compensation, including production costs, feed expenses and loss of income.
Decisions expected after evening meeting
The association is expected to decide its next steps following a meeting scheduled for later on Monday night, with official announcements due on Tuesday.
Petrou stressed that farmers do not intend to proceed with airport blockades.
However, she said that planned actions would focus on the Presidential Palace and major road networks in urban areas.
