A fire that broke out near the Limassol Port on Tuesday evening was the result of fireworks set off by a group of unidentified young people, according to Fire Chief Nikos Longinos. Speaking to the state radio, Longinos reassured the public and provided details about the incident.
The blaze primarily affected dry grass in an open field, while a tree and two stationary vehicles were also damaged. Fireworks scattered approximately 30 metres from the source of the fire were found by authorities. The police are currently investigating the incident to identify those responsible.
Intense explosions raised alarm
Witnesses reported hearing loud explosions, which initially led many to believe it was a more serious blast, causing concern among locals due to the proximity to the port. One fire engine quickly arrived at the scene, containing the fire before it spread or caused further damage.
Longinos clarified that the field where the fire broke out was outside the port zone, and no port facilities or goods were impacted. He stated that preliminary evidence suggests that the group deliberately set off the fireworks in the area, a behaviour that has been a recurring issue in the region. The substantial quantity of fireworks caused continuous noise, contributing to the impression of a larger explosion. The fire was intense in its initial stages, adding to public alarm.

Social media witnesses and quick response
Social media users were quick to share videos and images of the incident, with many commenting on the explosions and the thick clouds of smoke visible in the sky. Fire and police forces arrived promptly, managing to bring the situation under control without further escalation.
Police have cordoned off the area and are conducting investigations to prevent similar incidents in the future. Longinos urged the public to remain calm, assuring them that the situation is fully under control and there is no cause for concern.
