EUDI Wallet brings official documents together in one app

Date:

The EUDI Wallet is set to give citizens and businesses a single digital way to prove their identity and access services across the European Union.

Moving, working or studying in another EU country can currently involve different national systems and extensive paperwork. The EU-backed digital identity wallet aims to make these processes easier by allowing users to store and share official digital credentials through a mobile app.

What will the EUDI Wallet store?

The wallet is designed to bring a range of official documents and credentials together in one place. These could include national identity cards, driving licences, medical prescriptions and academic diplomas.

It will also support services such as electronic signatures, payment methods and business certificates.

The system could make tasks such as opening a bank account, renting a car or enrolling at a university in another EU country easier to complete digitally.

How will it work across Europe?

Each EU member state will provide its own wallet, but all versions will follow common European standards to ensure they can be used across borders.

Every EU country is required to make at least one certified wallet available by December 2026.

The EUDI Wallet is intended to give citizens greater control over how their digital identity and credentials are used while reducing the need to rely on separate national systems.

Privacy concerns remain

The project has also raised concerns among privacy and civil rights groups.

Critics question whether bringing large amounts of identity information into a single digital system could increase risks linked to cyberattacks, surveillance and the broader use of biometric data.

There are also practical concerns for member states. Countries with established national digital identity systems may face significant costs and technical challenges when adapting them to the new EU-wide framework.
