The European Commission is set to announce the appointment of a new EU envoy for the Cyprus issue, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Thursday.
Speaking upon his arrival at the European Council in Brussels, Christodoulides said discussions on potential candidates had already taken place and that Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will proceed with the official announcement after completing internal procedures.
Cyprus-Switzerland cooperation on Cyprus issue
Responding to questions, the President said he had also discussed the Cyprus issue during a meeting earlier with European Council President António Costa.
He noted that Costa informed him of recent communications with the UN Secretary-General, during which it was reiterated that progress in EU–Turkey relations depends on Turkey fulfilling its European obligations, including those related to Cyprus.
Schengen accession and EU priorities
Christodoulides also referred to Cyprus’ expected accession to the Schengen area, stating that the country has completed all necessary preparations and is awaiting a political decision.
“We expect very soon to have the political decision so that Cyprus can become a full member of the Schengen zone,” he said.
EU role in Cyprus negotiations
The President also highlighted ongoing coordination between the European Union and the United Nations regarding the Cyprus issue, noting that the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy is expected to visit Brussels at the end of June.
He expressed satisfaction with the level of cooperation and said it could help create conditions for a broader conference and the resumption of negotiations.
EU–Turkey relations linked to Cyprus obligations
Christodoulides reiterated that any progress in EU–Turkey relations depends on Turkey fulfilling its obligations towards the European Union.
He added that Cyprus’ recent achievements strengthen both internal and external leverage, enhancing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the Cyprus problem.
He stressed that the EU is ready to play a more active role in supporting a settlement.
