EU provides €250,000 in humanitarian aid for displaced in Afghanistan

Date:

Funding targets most vulnerable populations

In response to the rising number of displaced people amid escalating conflict, the European Union is providing €250,000 (over 18 million Afghanis) in humanitarian funding to support the most vulnerable populations, including those affected by last year’s earthquakes.

According to a statement published Thursday by the European External Action Service (EEAS), this funding will assist approximately 70,000 people in the provinces of Khost, Kunar, Nangarhar, Nuristan, Paktika, and Paktya.

Support through the Afghan Red Crescent

The EU funding will support the Afghan Red Crescent in delivering essential aid, including food distribution and cash assistance to meet urgent needs, as well as emergency shelter. It also provides access to primary healthcare, safe water, sanitation services, and other basic services.

This contribution forms part of the EU’s overall support to the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

EU’s ongoing commitment to Afghanistan

The European Union remains one of the main humanitarian donors in Afghanistan, with over €161 million allocated in 2025 to humanitarian partners in the country. In addition, the EU has organised dozens of humanitarian flights funded over previous years, including three so far this year, delivering 270 tonnes of food supplies.

The EU and its member states are the world’s largest providers of humanitarian aid. Their assistance expresses European solidarity with people in need worldwide, aiming to save lives, prevent and alleviate human suffering, and uphold the dignity and integrity of populations affected by natural disasters and human-made crises.

Through its Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid service, the EU supports millions of victims of conflict and disasters each year.
