High Representative condemns Holy Week ban

The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, condemned Israel’s police decision to bar the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Palm Sunday. She described the move as a violation of religious freedom and longstanding protections governing the Holy Sites.

In a statement posted on Sunday evening, Kallas said: “The decision by Israeli police to prevent the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Palm Sunday constitutes a violation of religious freedom and the long-standing protections surrounding the Holy Sites.”

Call for full protection of religious rights

Kallas emphasised that religious freedom in Jerusalem must be fully guaranteed for all faiths without exception. She added that the city’s multi-religious character should be protected to preserve its unique heritage and peace.
