EU Commissioner Brunner focuses on migration in Nicosia talks

Μigration, good practices on effective returns, progress in implementing the Pact on Migration and Asylum and the state of preparedness of the reception system in Cyprus will be discussed, among others, during the contacts of the Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, in Cyprus on Friday.

According to a press release from the European Commission, Brunner will have meetings with national authorities, tomorrow and on Friday, in Greece and Cyprus.

Brunner, who will first visit Greece on Thursday, will meet bilaterally on Friday in Nicosia with Minister of Justice and Public Order, Marios Hartsiotis, and Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection, Nicholas Ioannides.

It is noted that they will exchange views on good practices on effective returns, progress in implementing the Pact on Migration and Asylum, the state of preparedness of the reception system in Cyprus, as well as upcoming priorities in migration management, including the reception of unaccompanied minors and the ongoing work on the Pournara First Reception Centre.

On the same day, Commissioner Brunner will meet Minister of Foreign Affairs, Constantinos Kombos, to discuss developments in the Middle East, as well as future steps to further Cyprus’ integration into the Schengen area.

It is noted that during his visit tomorrow in Greece, Commissioner Brunner will meet with Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, followed by bilateral meetings with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Gerapetritis, Minister for Citizen Protection Michalis Chrisochoidis, Minister for Migration, Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, Minister for Maritime Affairs, Christos Stylianides and representatives of civil society organisations.

These bilateral meetings, the Commission adds, will focus on upcoming priorities in migration management, including the implementation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum, and on common challenges related to border management, as well as labour mobility and Greek initiatives to establish legal pathways.

The Commissioner will also discuss with his interlocutors in Greece the Commission’s upcoming proposal for new legislation on returns and the Internal Security Strategy.
