The European Commission has welcomed discussions on opening new crossing points, held today between President Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar. A Commission representative stated from Brussels that crossing points play a crucial role in building trust between communities.
Maciej Berestecki, spokesperson for the Commission on cohesion and reform matters, highlighted that the EU is prepared to actively support all stages of the process using all available resources. He referred to the meeting between the two Cypriot leaders, hosted by the UN representative in Cyprus, where discussions centred on opening new crossing points along the Green Line.
According to Berestecki, crossing points provide opportunities for Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots to interact and trade, which fosters trust and contributes to progress toward the reunification of Cyprus. He reiterated the EU’s readiness to support the UN-led process with appropriate resources.
