EU and Gulf states postpone summit in Saudi Arabia due to security concerns

Date:

The European Union and Gulf states have postponed a summit scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia next week amid growing security concerns linked to attacks by Iran-aligned Houthi forces.

The meeting had been due to take place in Riyadh on October 24. The Gulf Cooperation Council cited continued Houthi threats against Saudi Arabia and the extended suspension of operations at King Khalid International Airport when announcing the postponement on Thursday.

The EU did not give a specific reason for the delay, saying only that a new date would be announced “in due course”.

Security concerns disrupt Saudi Arabia’s plans

The postponement is a setback for Saudi Arabia’s efforts to host major international events despite the escalating conflict involving the Houthis.

The summit was intended, in part, to demonstrate European solidarity with Gulf states and Saudi Arabia amid the security crisis. Its delay highlights growing concerns over the regional situation and its impact on international travel and diplomacy.

According to Reuters, strikes on Riyadh’s international airport last weekend killed 13 people and wounded hundreds. The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack, and the airport remained closed as of Thursday.

The closure also raised concerns over air travel to and from the kingdom, adding to the challenges surrounding the planned summit.

EU reiterates commitment to Gulf ties

Despite the postponement, the EU said it continued to attach “great strategic importance” to its relations with the Gulf region.

The bloc also reaffirmed its commitment to deepening its partnership with Gulf states, indicating that the meeting is expected to be rescheduled rather than abandoned.
