Cyprus hosts key EU talks on agriculture

The EU agriculture meeting is taking place today and tomorrow in Nicosia, as part of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The informal meetings bring together EU Agriculture and Fisheries Ministers at the “Filoxenia” Conference Centre, with discussions focused on strengthening the resilience and strategic autonomy of the EU agri-food sector.

Today’s EU agriculture meeting, chaired by Cyprus Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Maria Panayiotou, centres on how to reinforce the resilience of Europe’s agricultural sector and address rising risks affecting food production.

EU Agriculture and Food Commissioner Christophe Hansen is attending, alongside MEP Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development Chair Veronika Vrecionová, as well as representatives from key sector organisations including COPA, COGECA and CEJA.

Key fisheries discussions on Tuesday

On Tuesday, 5 May, the EU agriculture meeting continues with the informal Council of Fisheries Ministers, also under the Cypriot Presidency.

The session will include participation from EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Costas Kadis and European Parliament Fisheries Committee Vice-Chair Paulo do Nascimento Cabral.

Discussions will focus on the future of the Common Fisheries Policy and the European Commission’s assessment of its implementation over the past decade.

Ministers are expected to review how the policy has performed and explore how it can better adapt to evolving challenges in the fisheries sector.

The meeting in Nicosia forms part of wider EU efforts to reassess long-term strategies in both agriculture and fisheries, with emphasis on sustainability, competitiveness and resilience.
