The European Commission has activated the rescEU strategic emergency reserve following a request from Cypriot authorities through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The support includes disinfectants, personal protective equipment, disposable protective suits, masks, shoe covers, and other critical supplies aimed at limiting further spread of the virus.
Ongoing EU-Cyprus cooperation
Since the crisis began in February, Cyprus has worked closely with the European Commission. Over one million vaccine doses have already been provided from the EU vaccine bank. Additionally, three missions of the EU Veterinary Emergency Team have delivered specialised guidance and on-site technical support.
European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Oliver Várhelyi, recently visited Cyprus, emphasising full EU solidarity with the affected communities.
EU officials stress rapid, science-based response
Commissioner Várhelyi highlighted that foot-and-mouth disease is highly contagious and requires immediate, decisive action based on scientific knowledge and international protocols. He noted that the EU’s support includes scientific assistance, laboratory backing, vaccines, and contributions toward financial compensation for affected farmers.
Meanwhile, EU Crisis Management Commissioner, Hadja Lahbib, stressed that Europe acts proactively and in solidarity, offering immediate help to contain the epidemic and protect both public health and livelihoods.
The EU Emergency Response Coordination Centre remains on standby to provide additional assistance if requested.
