Protest held in Limassol following devastating wildfire
A protest took place on Thursday evening in Limassol in response to the recent devastating wildfire in the mountainous region of Limassol. The demonstration began at 6:30 p.m. at the “Christos and Miltos Heroes Theatre” and was followed by a protest march to the city’s old port. The initiative was organised by citizens demanding meaningful accountability and immediate action to protect Cyprus’ natural environment and the communities affected by the fires.
A moving address was delivered by the event organiser, Sofia Pericleous, who tearfully described the hardships faced by local residents:
“I saw fellow citizens give up their day’s wage, vanish into the fires, and fight them in the mountains. They brought medicines, clothes, food, water. They gave shelter, offered comfort, and loved their land. And in the end, they realised… this is Cyprus.”
Participants in the march held banners and chanted slogans, calling for responsibility to be taken and for serious preventive measures to be implemented.
