Elton John made a heartfelt revelation during a charity performance of the musical The Devil Wears Prada, for which he composed the lyrics. Speaking on stage, the legendary superstar shared that he was unable to watch the show due to losing his vision as a result of a “serious” infection. He took the opportunity to thank his husband, David Furnish, referring to him as his “rock.”
Explaining his absence from many rehearsals, Elton John mentioned that his loss of vision had made it difficult for him to attend. He expressed his appreciation for the musical, saying he enjoyed listening to it and praised the evening’s performance, while thanking the audience for their support.
In September, the star disclosed that a severe eye infection contracted in France two months earlier had left him blind in his right eye and with “limited vision” in his left. Last week, during an appearance on Good Morning America, he explained that his vision problems were delaying his next album with longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin. According to The Guardian, he stated that he had been unable to see for months and, while he could manage activities such as interviews, going to the studio to record was not currently possible.
The The Devil Wears Prada musical recently began its run at the Dominion Theatre in London. Proceeds from Sunday’s performance were donated to the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
The glittering event was attended by numerous fashion industry icons, including Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who is widely believed to have inspired the character of Miranda Priestly. Speaking to the BBC, Wintour remarked that it was up to audiences and her collaborators to decide if there were similarities between herself and Priestly.
