Elon Musk has announced the creation of a new political movement called the America Party, framing it as a bold response to what he calls a broken and monopolised political system in the United States. Drawing on classical military strategy, Musk likened his approach to that of Theban general Epaminondas, who famously defeated Sparta at the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BCE.
The surprise announcement came on Saturday, following a poll Musk conducted on X (formerly Twitter). In the post, he declared: “Today, the America Party is born- to give you back your freedom.” According to the poll results, a majority of respondents supported the creation of a new political party.
The America Party, he said, will be built on a promise to “restore freedom” to American citizens. Musk harshly criticised both major parties, accusing Democrats and Republicans of operating as a “single mechanism of power” that serves entrenched interests rather than the public good.
Musk directly attacked Donald Trump’s economic policies, saying the former president’s fiscal plans risk pushing the country into bankruptcy. He cited the ballooning federal deficit, which he claimed has jumped from an already high $2 trillion to $2.5 trillion.

Greek tactics in American politics?
In a striking metaphor, Musk said his political strategy would mirror Epaminondas’ use of the oblique phalanx, a revolutionary military formation used at Leuctra to defeat the Spartans. The tactic involved concentrating force on a single weak point in the enemy line, allowing a smaller army to overcome a larger and more established force.
“In politics as in war,” Musk suggested, “disruption comes from pressure at the weakest point. That’s where change begins.”
Though Musk cannot legally run for president due to his South African birth, he is positioning himself as a kingmaker and ideological force ahead of the 2026 midterms and 2028 presidential race.
Whether the America Party gains traction or becomes another short-lived third-party effort remains to be seen. But Musk’s willingness to mix classical warfare with modern populism is a reminder of how political branding- and historical narrative- continue to shape American discourse.
