Tragedy has struck Cyprus as authorities confirm that the two individuals who lost their lives in the Limassol wildfire were an elderly couple. The couple was found inside a completely burned vehicle along the Monagri–Alassa road, an area that became one of the epicentres of the devastating blaze that erupted on Wednesday.
Initial reports suggest that the couple, believed to be long-time residents with a holiday home in the area, were likely trying to flee the advancing flames when they were overtaken by the fire. The vehicle was found charred beyond recognition, indicating the speed and intensity with which the wildfire spread across the region.
A forensic team arrived at the site early Thursday morning to conduct examinations and begin the process of identifying the victims. While authorities have not yet officially released their names, local sources indicate that the couple were known and respected within the community, often spending summers in their countryside home.
The Limassol district remains in a state of emergency, with dozens of homes destroyed, hundreds evacuated, and entire communities left without power. Officials have launched a criminal investigation into the cause of the fire, with early findings and eyewitness reports suggesting possible arson, as flames were seen starting from two separate ignition points.
Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis expressed the State’s condolences, calling the situation “unprecedented” and confirming that immediate support measures are being rolled out for the affected communities.
As Cyprus mourns the loss of this elderly couple, firefighting efforts continue across the Troodos foothills to contain what is quickly becoming one of the island’s most destructive wildfires in recent memory.
