EIB President visits University of Cyprus

The President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Nadia Calviño, visited the University of Cyprus on Friday, as part of her first official visit to Cyprus as President of the EIB Group.

The University of Cyprus says in a press release that, upon receiving Calviño, the Rector of the University, Professor Tasos Christofides, briefly presented the multifaceted work carried out by the University, as well as the infrastructure projects currently underway on the campus, which are financially supported by the EIB.

Calviño and the delegation accompanying her were informed about the actions and initiatives of the University that enhance academic excellence and research in Cyprus.

The President of the EIB was given a tour of the modern facilities of the campus, visiting first the Information Centre – Library “Stelios Ioannou”, followed by the Building of the Faculty of Engineering. “During the tour, Calviño expressed her enthusiasm for the infrastructure and progress of the University of Cyprus. She emphasised the strategic importance of Cyprus in the region, highlighting the country’s role as a member state of the European Union and the importance of its historical and geographical location,” the press release adds.

It is also noted that Calviño’s presence at the University of Cyprus “highlights the importance that the EIB attaches to the financing and support of high-value projects for Cyprus, considering the University of Cyprus a reliable, valuable and progressive space”. It is added that the Rector invited the President of the EIB to attend the inauguration of the new building of the Faculty of Engineering, which is expected to take place in the coming months.

“This visit constitutes another milestone in the cooperation between the University of Cyprus and the European Investment Bank, aiming for continuous development and progress. In particular, the cooperation focuses on financing projects that strengthen the infrastructure and capabilities of the University, contributing to the further upgrade of university excellence and the educational experience,” the press release concludes.
