Educational psychologists up 69%, ministry says

Date:

Cyprus’ Ministry of Finance says the number of educational psychologists working in the education system has increased by 69% between 2022 and 2026, while rejecting reports that it opposed a request from the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth (MoESY) for additional funding in the 2027 budget.

In a statement, the ministry said the reports “do not reflect reality”, adding that it continues to work closely with MoESY and is giving careful consideration to all requests as preparations for the 2027 education budget continue.

Number rises to 71

The ministry said 71 educational psychologists are currently serving in Cyprus’ education system in 2026, following repeated approvals for additional staffing.

According to the figures released, there were 42 educational psychologists in 2022 and 2023. The number rose to 66 in 2024, remained unchanged in 2025, and increased to 71 in 2026, representing an overall rise of 69% over the four years.

Education workforce also grows

The Ministry of Finance also highlighted growth across the wider education sector, stating that approved employment increased by 2,450 positions between 2022 and 2026.

It said total staffing rose from 13,945 employees during the 2022–2023 school year to 16,395 for the 2026–2027 school year, marking an 18% increase.

Budget discussions continue

The ministry concluded that the government and the Ministry of Finance continue to place significant emphasis on education through their policies and budget planning.

It added that discussions on the 2027 budget, including requests relating to educational psychologists, are still ongoing.
