The three major education unions in Cyprus- POED, OELMEK, and OLTEK- are meeting in an emergency session today at 10:00 a.m. to determine their next steps regarding permanent teaching posts.
The meeting, taking place at POED headquarters, will address the November 2023 agreement on increasing permanent positions in education. The unions are concerned that the agreement may not be implemented as promised by the government.
In a joint statement last week, the education unions in Cyprus warned that any breach of the deal would “lead to unnecessary confrontation and disruption in the education sector.”
They emphasised that the agreement, which aims to reduce the number of temporary teachers and ensure that the proportion of non-permanent staff remains below 7%, was the result of extensive negotiations with the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth.
The unions argue that high numbers of temporary teachers hinder school staffing and smooth operation. They are calling on the President to intervene to uphold the November 2023 agreement and avoid turmoil in the education system.
