An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale was recorded off the coast of Cyprus on Monday afternoon, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
The tremor occurred at approximately 3:30 PM local time, with the epicentre located offshore near Larnaca. The earthquake’s focal depth was measured at 7.6 kilometres beneath the seabed.
Although no damage has been reported so far, the earthquake was felt in several areas across the island. Social media users noted that the shaking was noticeable but brief, prompting concern in some residential and coastal zones.
Seismic activity is not uncommon in the eastern Mediterranean region, but such events remain closely monitored due to the island’s geological sensitivity.
Authorities have not issued any emergency warnings, but continue to assess the situation in collaboration with geophysical experts.
