The House of Representatives passed a law imposing an €85 on-the-spot fine for parking in public electric vehicle charging spaces if your vehicle is not actively charging.
The rule applies to:
- All non-electric vehicles
- Electric vehicles not connected to the charger
A vehicle is considered “charging” only when the cable is physically plugged into the charging station.
The amendment, proposed by Green Party MP Stavros Papadouris, also covers municipal parking areas.
Why the new law?
Papadouris said the change closes a legal gap after numerous citizen complaints about charging bays being blocked by both conventional and electric cars that are simply parked.
The €85 fine already applies to misuse of bus lanes and was chosen to act as an effective deterrent.
