€6,000 fine at Larnaca airport over tobacco

Date:

A 32-year-old Turkish Cypriot woman was fined €6,000 after customs officers at Larnaca airport found undeclared tobacco in her luggage on 21 June.

Acting on a tip-off, authorities searched the woman’s suitcase before her flight to the UK and discovered five cartons of cigarettes and 14kg of loose tobacco for roll-ups.

The products lacked health warnings in Greek and Turkish, a sign they were untaxed. She was arrested, and her luggage was confiscated.

The incident was resolved with an out-of-court Larnaca airport fine, and the woman was released after paying the full amount.
