As part of targeted and intensive operations launched on 19 June 2026, Cyprus’ Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN) dismantled a criminal network involved in the importation and trafficking of large quantities of dried opium poppy pods (Papaver somniferum) and solved a total of 17 related cases across the island.
The nationwide operations were primarily aimed at combating criminal groups involved in importing the specific narcotic and protecting the public from the harmful consequences of its trafficking and use.

During the investigation, YKAN seized approximately 60 kilograms of opium poppy pods and arrested 21 individuals, while two additional suspects are currently being sought.
Of the 17 cases uncovered, 16 have already been filed before the courts and referred to the Criminal Court for trial. All 21 defendants remain in custody pending legal proceedings.
Investigators also obtained evidence against three of the accused, indicating that they allegedly imported additional quantities of opium poppy pods during the past three months. They have subsequently been charged.
As part of efforts to curb the importation of the drug, YKAN contacted an overseas company through which the packages containing the seized quantities had been sent to Cyprus. Following this communication, recommendations were made and measures were implemented, resulting in the termination of the ability to ship such products to Cyprus.

YKAN said it will continue its operations with undiminished intensity, focusing on identifying and dismantling drug trafficking networks and preventing the importation of narcotic substances into the Republic of Cyprus.
