A drone attacked the major Khor Mor natural gas complex in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan Region on Wednesday night, halting gas supplies to power stations across the region, local authorities announced.
“At 23:30 local time, a drone struck the Khor Mor field facility, cutting gas supply to electricity plants,” the Kurdistan Region’s gas and electricity authority stated.
The field, operated by UAE-based Dana Gas and located between Kirkuk and Sulaymaniyah, supplies most of Kurdistan’s electricity.
A security source told AFP the drone hit storage tanks, triggering a powerful explosion and large fire.
Iraqi authorities confirmed early Thursday that the attack caused no casualties and condemned it as an attempt to undermine the country’s security and economic stability.
No group has claimed responsibility.
The strike caused a loss of 2,600 megawatts – approximately 80% of Kurdistan’s total generating capacity – according to Omed Ahmed, spokesman for the region’s electricity regulator.
Khor Mor has faced repeated drone and rocket attacks in recent years. In April 2024, a similar strike killed four Yemeni workers.
Kurdistan has seen a series of drone attacks on energy infrastructure this year, mostly unattributed.
