Authorities on alert after discovery
Authorities are on alert after dozens of dead fish were found at Athalassa Lake on Sunday. Multiple services mobilised immediately, including the Departments of Forests, Water Development, Fisheries, Veterinary Services, the State Laboratory, and the Environment Department.
According to Forestry Department spokesperson Glafkos Kyriakou, a sudden increase in water levels likely stirred up sediment from the lakebed, affecting the fish. He stressed that early indications do not point to disease or pollution.
Initial findings point to natural cause
Officials estimate that around 80 fish have been found dead so far, with more being recovered. Most are carp weighing between 2–3 kg, with some smaller fish around 1 kg.
“The most likely scenario is that the sudden accumulation of water disturbed the mud at the bottom, impacting the fish. It does not appear to involve disease or pollution,” Kyriakou said.
Measures and ongoing analysis
Authorities have already deployed crews to collect the dead fish and patrol the lake area to prevent further impact on wildlife. At the same time, all relevant departments are taking water and fish samples for laboratory analysis, with results expected within a week.
Kyriakou noted that a similar incident occurred in 2024 without disrupting the lake’s ecological balance. He added that the number of dead fish remains limited, while many fish, turtles, and birds in the area remain unaffected.
Ministry monitoring situation
The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment confirmed it has issued immediate instructions to investigate and manage the incident.
“The aim is to identify the causes promptly and contain the phenomenon. The public will be informed once the investigation is completed,” the Ministry said in a statement.
Authorities stressed that there is currently no cause for concern for the public.
