More than 20 civilians were killed in a Donetsk Russian strike, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced today.
According to Zelensky, a Russian aerial bomb struck the village of Yarova in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, killing “more than 20 civilians” at the very moment pensions were being distributed. “Directly at people. Ordinary people. Exactly when pensions were being given out,” he wrote on social media.
He urged the international community to respond: “The world must not be silent. The world must not remain idle. There needs to be a response from the United States, from Europe, from the G20.”
Zelensky also posted a video showing bodies on the ground near a destroyed van used by Ukraine’s postal service to deliver pensions in rural areas.
Regional governor Vadym Filashkin confirmed at least 21 dead and a similar number injured. “This is not a military action but pure terrorism,” he said, adding that rescuers, doctors, police, and local officials were already on site.
The village of Yarova, less than 10 kilometres from the front line with Russia, had a population of around 1,800 before the February 2022 invasion. Zelensky stressed that such Russian strikes must not go unanswered, warning that Moscow continues destroying lives while evading stronger sanctions.
