Dionysis Savvopoulos opens up about his cancer battle

Date:

Renowned Greek singer and songwriter Dionysis Savvopoulos has opened up about his deeply personal battle with cancer and the challenges he faced along the way. In his autobiography “Because Time Flows Freely”, he recounts his journey with unflinching honesty and a profound sense of humanity, sharing moments of vulnerability and resilience that defined his struggle.

His diagnosis came five years ago, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, when he finally decided to seek medical advice after experiencing persistent discomfort. Tests revealed lung cancer, a revelation that didn’t come as a complete surprise to him. Having been a smoker for over fifty years, he reflected on the years of neglect and urged others to take better care of themselves. The diagnosis marked the beginning of a gruelling period that included the removal of half of one lung and treatments that left him exhausted and deeply weakened.

Two years into his battle, while still undergoing immunotherapy, Savvopoulos encountered another significant setback. In the spring of 2022, he contracted COVID-19. Despite being cautious and taking every possible precaution, including wearing a mask, he believed he may have caught the virus while travelling to Cyprus for a series of concerts commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe. Returning from the trip, he fell gravely ill with a high fever. His condition was serious enough for doctors to consider admitting him to the intensive care unit due to severe shortness of breath. It was Holy Week, and he vividly remembers the tense atmosphere as medical professionals debated his treatment.

What followed was a series of physically and emotionally challenging moments. His treatments left him drained, and the effects of the virus compounded his vulnerability. He recalls waking up one night soaked, his bedclothes and sheets drenched. Embarrassed and conflicted, he hesitated to call for help. As a public figure, the idea of being seen in such a vulnerable state felt unbearable. Yet, he eventually reached out, and the nursing staff responded with quiet professionalism. They assisted him with care, helping him change and settle into fresh sheets. It was a moment of profound humility and acceptance for Savvopoulos, as he allowed himself to let go of his shame and lean on the compassion of others.

In those moments, he realised that what mattered most wasn’t pride or appearances but the humanity and kindness extended to him. That Easter, as the nurses wished him well, he found himself profoundly moved by the simplicity and significance of their care. It was a poignant reminder of resilience, the power of compassion, and the importance of finding light even in the darkest times.
