Dimi Mavropoulos died from drowning and multiple injuries

The death of businessman Dimi Mavropoulos was caused by drowning, according to a post-mortem examination carried out on Monday.

Mavropoulos, 76, died after his boat sank off Cape Greco last Saturday during severe weather conditions.

According to police, the post-mortem was conducted by forensic pathologists Angeliki Papetta and Orthodoxos Orthodoxou. It found that the 76-year-old died from drowning, accompanied by multiple bodily injuries consistent with the reported circumstances, including rough seas and the accidental impact of the boat he was travelling on.

Six people rescued

A total of six people were recovered during an operation coordinated by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, which was launched to rescue people in distress aboard three boats affected by the rough seas.

Mavropoulos was recovered unconscious by helicopter and transferred to Famagusta General Hospital, where his death was confirmed.

Two people were reported to be in good health and were released after receiving first aid, while two others remain hospitalised at Famagusta General Hospital.

Two of the three boats were completely destroyed.
