Die Zeit: Cyprus arrest suspect planned attacks for Hamas

Date:

Arrest at Larnaca airport under EU warrant

A man suspected of links to planned Hamas attacks in Europe was arrested in Cyprus, according to German newspaper Die Zeit, as part of an international investigation into a network targeting Israeli or Jewish sites.

Germany’s Federal Prosecutor in Karlsruhe said authorities arrested the suspect last Friday at Larnaca Airport under a European arrest warrant. Prosecutors accuse him of membership in a foreign terrorist organisation.

Suspect arrived from Lebanon

According to Reuters, the suspect, identified only as Kamel M., was born in Lebanon and was arrested upon arrival in Cyprus on a flight from Beirut. Investigators believe he helped transport 300 rounds of live ammunition in August 2025, allegedly intended for assassination attacks against Israeli or Jewish targets in Germany and other European countries.

Following the arrest in Cyprus, German authorities searched his apartment in Berlin on Sunday as part of the same case. Officials expect to extradite him to Germany, where he will appear before a judge at the Federal Court of Justice.

Investigation spans several European countries

Authorities say the case forms part of a wider investigation into a Hamas-linked network operating in Europe. Previous arrests connected to the same group took place in Berlin, while investigators also carried out searches in Vienna, where police found a weapons cache.

In London, police arrested another suspect believed to have transported weapons from Germany to Austria. European authorities continue their investigation as they try to map the full network and its possible links to terrorist activity across the continent.
