Desalination covers about 80% of Cyprus water supply

Date:

Desalination meets majority of Cyprus water needs

The Department of Water Development (WDD) reports that desalination now provides approximately 80% of Cyprus’s total water supply. The daily production from all units reaches about 245,000 cubic metres, significantly supporting nationwide water distribution.

Current and mobile desalination units

Cyprus currently operates five permanent desalination plants in Dhekelia, Larnaca, Vasiliko, Episkopi, and Paphos. In addition, two mobile units serve Kissonerga and Moni.

Expansion plans for summer demand

DWD confirms that two new mobile desalination units will soon come online in Garylli and Limassol Port. Their integration into the network will enhance water supply capacity, particularly during the summer months when demand rises sharply.

Focus on renewable energy and sustainability

Given desalination’s high energy requirements, WDD emphasises incorporating Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in plant operations. Upcoming contracts plan to use RES to reduce production costs and strengthen the environmental sustainability of the water system.

Ongoing projects in Famagusta

Regarding the construction of a mobile desalination unit in the free area of Famagusta, WDD clarified that the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment manages the project.
