Demosthenous murder: Police examine items left behind

Date:

Investigations into the murder of Stavros Demosthenous, 49, are continuing, with police focusing on scientific examinations that could provide answers about the perpetrators of the brutal crime.

Authorities are awaiting the results of genetic analyses on evidence found among the items left behind by the killers, which are expected to guide the next steps in the investigation. The suspects reportedly abandoned a hat and the motorcycle used in their escape.

Police spokesperson Kyriakos Theodorou told Mesimeri kai Kati that the police helicopter may have prevented the perpetrators from attempting to tamper with the motorcycle believed to have been used in the crime.

He added that efforts are under way to determine the role of each suspect in the murder.

Three men, aged 58, 30 and 39, remain in custody after being arrested on Sunday night under court warrants as part of the investigation. The 44-year-old owner of the motorcycle, believed to have been used in the getaway, is also in custody. The motorcycle was allegedly used after the suspects set fire to the van involved in the murder.

According to court testimony, the 58-year-old and 30-year-old suspects are linked to the sale and purchase of the motorcycle, which the 44-year-old owner claims appeared suspicious and suggested it would be used for illegal activity.

The 39-year-old suspect reportedly owns a pickup truck, seen on CCTV following the motorcycle. The driver is believed to be the person who helped the perpetrators flee after abandoning the bike in Agios Tychonas.

Investigators said both the van and the pickup truck were seen circulating in the area before the murder took place.

The first suspect denies involvement and has given various statements under investigation. The second requested to make a statement in the presence of his lawyer, while the third admits being in the area but denies any role in the killing.

The three suspects appeared in court on Tuesday morning under heavy security, wearing bulletproof vests. Despite objections from defence lawyers, the court approved the police request for an eight-day remand.

The Limassol CID continues intensive investigations in an effort to fully solve the Demosthenous murder.
