De facto Syrian leader: Trump will bring peace to the Middle East

Date:

The de facto leader of Syria, Ahmed al-Sarra, congratulated Donald Trump on assuming the presidency of the United States and stated that he looks forward to improving relations between Damascus and Washington.

“We believe he is the leader who will bring peace to the Middle East and restore stability to the region,” he said.

The United States, the European Union, Britain, and other countries imposed harsh sanctions on Syria following the Assad regime’s crackdown on pro-democracy protests in 2011, which led to a civil war.

In early January, Washington exempted transactions with Syrian state entities from sanctions for six months to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the country.

Damascus welcomed the decision while also calling for the complete lifting of sanctions imposed against it.
