Cyprus’ dams remain significantly better supplied than at the same time last year, with total storage standing at around 37.1% of capacity in early October, according to data from the Water Development Department (WDD).
The latest figures show about 111.4 million cubic metres of water stored across the island’s reservoirs, compared with just over 39.7 million cubic metres during the corresponding period last year.
Kouris and Asprokremmos hold the largest reserves
The two largest reservoirs, Kouris and Asprokremmos, remain among the main contributors to Cyprus’ available water reserves.
As of 2 October, Kouris was at 37% of its 115 million cubic metre capacity, holding about 42.57 million cubic metres of water.
Asprokremmos stood at 35.9%, with approximately 18.79 million cubic metres stored.
Evretou was at 38.9%, while Kannaviou reached 42.5%. Germasogeia was at 48.4%, while Arminou was among the better-supplied reservoirs at 61%.
Several reservoirs remain at low levels
Despite the stronger overall position compared with last year, a number of dams remain below 35% capacity.
Lefkara was at 17.3%, while Kalavasos stood at 21.8% and Dipotamos at 25.3%.
Achna remained the lowest among the main reservoirs, with storage at just 8.3% of capacity.
Mavrokolympos was at 29.6%, while Polemidia stood at 43.1%.
Water reserves still well above last year
The figures mark a substantial improvement compared with October 2025, when Cyprus’ dams held only about 13.2% of their combined capacity.
The improvement follows a much stronger 2025–26 hydrological year, which brought considerably higher inflows into the reservoirs and allowed storage levels to recover from the very low levels recorded towards the end of 2025.
The Water Development Department’s online Cyprus Dams Monitor provides real-time reservoir storage data and categorises dams according to their storage levels, from critical to excellent.
While the start of the new hydrological year has seen the usual summer drawdown continue into October, the overall water reserve remains considerably healthier than a year ago.
With the winter rainfall season now approaching, further inflows will be crucial for replenishing the reservoirs and strengthening Cyprus’ water reserves for the months ahead.
