Gross monthly earnings in Cyprus increased in 2025, with median pay rising by 3.8% to €1,953 and average earnings climbing by 4.3% to €2,591, according to estimates published by the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat).

Median monthly gross earnings stood at €1,881 in 2024, while the average was €2,483.

The two figures offer different perspectives on pay. The median represents the midpoint of the earnings distribution, meaning half of employees earn less and half earn more. The average is more strongly influenced by higher salaries.

Most employees earn between €1,000 and €1,249

The largest group of employees in 2025 fell within the monthly gross earnings bracket of €1,000 to €1,249, accounting for 13% of the workforce.

The next largest groups were employees earning between €1,500 and €1,749, at 11.4%, and those earning between €1,250 and €1,499, at 11.2%.

The figures show that a substantial share of employees earn within these salary brackets, despite significant differences at higher income levels.

Differences between men and women

Cystat’s data reveal differences in how men’s and women’s earnings are distributed across salary brackets.

Women accounted for a higher share of employees than men in the €1,000–€1,249 and €1,250–€1,499 brackets, by 3.3 and 3.5 percentage points respectively.

At the other end of the scale, men accounted for a higher share of employees earning €6,000 or more per month, with a difference of 3.1 percentage points.

These figures describe the distribution of men and women across salary brackets. They do not, by themselves, measure the overall gender pay gap.

Financial services record highest average earnings

Average monthly gross earnings varied considerably between economic sectors in 2025.

Employees in agriculture, forestry and fishing recorded the lowest average, at €956 per month. Financial and insurance activities recorded the highest, at €5,038.

All economic sectors reported an increase in average earnings compared with 2024.

The largest percentage rise was recorded in mining and quarrying, where average earnings increased by 10.3%. Cystat cautioned that the sector employs relatively few people, making its statistical estimates more sensitive to changes in individual observations.

Information and communication followed with an increase of 7.7%, while financial and insurance activities recorded growth of 7%.

Government employees are listed as a subgroup within the public administration, defence and compulsory social security sector.

Cypriot employees earn more on average and at the median

Earnings also differed according to employees’ nationality.

Cypriot employees recorded average monthly gross earnings of €2,625 in 2025, compared with €2,524 for non-Cypriot employees.

Average earnings increased by 4.7% for Cypriot employees and 3.7% for non-Cypriots compared with the previous year.

The difference was larger in median earnings. Cypriot employees recorded median monthly gross pay of €2,145, compared with €1,597 for non-Cypriots.

Median earnings increased by 4.5% among Cypriot employees and 3.4% among non-Cypriot employees.

Overall, the figures show higher average and median earnings among Cypriot employees. However, the difference does not necessarily apply to every occupation or salary bracket.

Non-Cypriot employees feature at both ends of the pay scale

The distribution of employees by nationality and salary bracket presents a more complex picture.

According to Cystat, non-Cypriot employees accounted for higher proportions than Cypriot employees in both the lower earnings brackets below €1,500 and the highest bracket of €6,000 or more.

This indicates that non-Cypriot employees are represented at both ends of the earnings distribution. Average and median figures alone do not capture all the differences within each group.

Earnings vary sharply by sector and nationality

A breakdown of average earnings by economic sector and nationality reveals further differences.

Among Cypriot employees, average monthly gross earnings ranged from €1,744 in agriculture, forestry and fishing to €4,383 in financial and insurance activities.

For non-Cypriot employees, the range was wider, extending from €664 in agriculture, forestry and fishing to €6,649 in financial and insurance activities.

Notably, non-Cypriot employees recorded higher average earnings than Cypriots in financial and insurance activities, despite having lower average earnings overall.

The figures underline the importance of examining salaries by sector as well as in aggregate. Overall averages can conceal substantial differences between industries and groups of employees.
