The Cyprus Psychologists’ Association (CYPSA) calls for formal recognition and institutional adoption of psychological assessment as a core pillar in managing the effects of gender-based and domestic violence, marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
In its statement, CYPSA notes that violence against women remains a pressing social and public issue. It says this challenge demands steady commitment, strong cooperation and consistent institutional action. Violence is not limited to isolated incidents but affects mental health, social equality and social cohesion.
The Association explains that violence takes many forms and affects women and children in multiple ways. It stresses that every form of violence, regardless of context, violates human dignity and fundamental rights.
CYPSA highlights the decisive role of psychology in understanding and responding to these impacts. It states that psychologists help prevent violence, assess its effects and support recovery. They also support affected women, children and other family members.
The Association calls psychological assessment a crucial tool for understanding the consequences of violence and ensuring fair, reliable, and evidence-based support. It warns that the lack of formal mechanisms leads to fragmented interventions and can cause secondary victimisation.
CYPSA says only registered professional psychologists should conduct psychological assessments under ethical and scientific standards. It also states that institutions must recognise these assessments in both judicial and administrative processes.
Finally, the Association claims it will work with relevant authorities to promote a unified national protocol for the psychological assessment of adult victims of violence, in order to ensure consistent quality and scientific grounding in all services provided.
