Cyprus weather forecast: Rain, cold snap, and snow

Periods of mostly clear skies will alternate with increased cloud cover across Cyprus, according to the Cyprus weather forecast, bringing isolated showers and light snowfall over the higher mountains.

Rain and snow in higher ground

Today, intervals of sunshine will be interrupted by locally increased clouds, which are expected to produce isolated rain showers and light snowfall over the highest mountainous areas.

Winds will blow mainly northwesterly to northerly, initially light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort. Gradually, they will strengthen to moderate and locally strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort, while in windward areas they may temporarily reach very strong levels of 5 to 6 Beaufort.

The sea will be slightly rough to rough in the south and east, and rough to locally very rough in the west and north.

Temperatures will rise to around 16°C inland, about 18°C along the southeastern and eastern coasts, near 17°C across the rest of the coastline, and around 4°C in the higher mountains, where frost will persist locally.

Frost overnight

Tonight, increased cloud cover will continue at intervals and may bring isolated showers, mainly in northern areas, as well as snowfall over the highest mountains. Light snow or sleet is also possible in mountainous areas at lower elevations.

Winds will remain northwesterly to northerly, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort and occasionally strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be slightly rough to rough in the south and east, while in the west and north it will be rough and locally very rough.

Temperatures will drop to around 5°C inland, near 6°C on the coasts and approximately -3°C in the higher mountains, where frost is expected to form.

Outlook through Sunday

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, periods of locally increased cloud cover are expected, with the possibility of isolated showers and snowfall over the higher mountains. Until Saturday, light snowfall or sleet may also affect mountainous areas at lower elevations.

On Friday and Saturday nights, frost may form locally in sheltered lowland areas.

Temperatures will fall slightly on Friday, remaining below average for the season, before gradually rising slightly again by Sunday.

At the time of the bulletin’s release, the snow depth at Chionistra stood at 1cm.
