Cyprus weather: dust, storms, temperature drop

Date:

Low pressure system moves north

A change in Cyprus weather is expected from tomorrow as a low-pressure system centred over Egypt moves north, affecting the island. Dust will linger in the atmosphere until Sunday, with concentrations expected to rise at times, while showers, thunderstorms, and a significant temperature drop are forecast for Saturday.

Today’s conditions

Today, skies will gradually become partly cloudy, mainly due to high clouds. Winds will blow mainly northeast to southeast, weak to moderate at 3–4 Beaufort, locally strong at 5 Beaufort along windward coasts.

Seas will be slightly rough to rough. Temperatures are expected to reach around 21°C in inland and coastal areas and 11°C in higher mountains.

Tonight’s forecast

Tonight, skies will be mostly cloudy with isolated rain showers expected later, mainly along southern and western coasts. Winds will remain northeast, weak to moderate at 3–4 Beaufort, increasing later to strong at 4–5 Beaufort.

Seas will remain slightly rough to rough. Temperatures will fall to around 11°C inland and along the coast, and 4°C in higher mountains, where frost may occur locally.

Saturday and Sunday outlook

Saturday will see mostly cloudy skies with local showers and isolated thunderstorms. Hail may occur in storms, and higher Troodos peaks may experience sleet or snow. Strong northeasterly winds will affect the island.

On Sunday, locally increased cloudiness is expected to produce isolated showers and thunderstorms.

Monday will bring locally increased clouds with minimal changes in weather.

Temperature trends

Saturday will bring a noticeable drop in temperatures, below average for this time of year. On Sunday, temperatures will rise slightly, with minimal change expected on Monday.
