Cyprus weather: 39°C heat before thunderstorms

Date:

Seasonal low pressure is affecting the region, with Cyprus weather bringing temperatures of up to 39°C on Thursday before isolated rain and thunderstorms develop during the afternoon.

Conditions across most of the island will initially be mainly clear with temporarily increased cloud cover. After midday, however, clouds developing over the mountains and inland areas are expected to bring isolated showers, with an isolated thunderstorm also possible.

Winds will initially be variable and light at 3 Beaufort, gradually becoming south-westerly to north-westerly at 3 to 4 Beaufort. They may temporarily strengthen to 4 to 5 Beaufort along the south-western coast.

The sea will generally be calm to slightly rough.

Temperatures will rise to around 39°C inland, 32°C on the western and south-western coasts, 34°C along the remaining coastal areas and 28°C in the higher mountains.

Fog possible overnight

Tonight will remain mainly clear, although locally increased low cloud will occasionally develop in coastal areas.

Later in the night and around dawn, mist or fog is expected to form locally, particularly in eastern and inland areas.

Winds will gradually become downslope and light at 3 Beaufort, while the sea will remain calm to slightly rough.

Temperatures will fall to around 22°C inland, 23°C along the coast and 18°C in the higher mountains.

Rain, thunderstorms and hail possible Friday and Saturday

Periods of locally increased cloud are expected on Friday and Saturday.

After midday, clouds developing over the mountains and inland areas are forecast to produce isolated rain and thunderstorms. Hail cannot be ruled out during thunderstorms.

Mist or fog will also form locally during the night and morning hours, particularly in eastern and inland areas.

The unsettled Cyprus weather will ease by Sunday, when conditions are expected to become mainly clear with temporarily increased cloud cover.

Temperatures to fall before rising again

Temperatures will gradually fall slightly through Saturday, temporarily returning to around the seasonal average.

A small increase is then expected on Sunday, taking temperatures back above normal levels for the time of year.
