71 summer schools open across the island

A total of 71 summer schools opened across Cyprus today, providing places for more than 9,200 children as the government expands the programme to support families during the school holidays.

Education, Sport and Youth Minister Athena Michaelidou announced that 64 mainstream summer schools are welcoming around 8,700 children, while seven special summer schools are providing programmes for approximately 500 children.

Support for children and working families

In a post on X, Michaelidou said supporting children and families remains a key government priority.

She described the summer school programme as an initiative that offers children a safe, creative and high-quality environment during the summer months while providing practical support for working parents.

According to the minister, the programme also helps address the everyday challenges faced by families during the school break.

Education with a stronger social role

Michaelidou said the government’s vision for education extends beyond academic learning, promoting a system that develops children’s skills and abilities while remaining active and accessible throughout the year.

She added that the government will continue to strengthen and expand programmes and services that respond to the needs of modern society and improve citizens’ daily lives.

The minister also stressed that the social dimension of education is an integral part of the government’s vision for a better Cyprus, offering greater opportunities, stronger social cohesion and an improved quality of life for all.
