CSA Celebrates 80 Years
The Cyprus Shipping Agents Association (CSA) marked its 80th anniversary with a vision for the future. New CSA president Riginos Tsanos highlighted the island’s ambition to position its ports as pillars of stability and connectivity in a region of shifting alliances and emerging trade corridors.
Speaking at the event, Tsanos stressed that Cypriot ports can become a hub of stability and connectivity for the entire Eastern Mediterranean.
Strategic opportunities
Current conditions create significant opportunities for Cyprus, he said. The country must seize them with seriousness and expertise.
Tsanos linked these prospects to several initiatives:
- The new European Port Strategy
- The India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC)
- The EU’s Military Mobility initiative
He called for steady progress on major infrastructure projects. Special mention went to the upgrade of Larnaca port and the new Vasiliko port development. The CSA, he added, must actively participate in planning to ensure decisions meet real market needs.

Green and digital challenges
The president also addressed the sector’s transition challenges. He emphasised:
- Developing shore-side electricity for ships (Cold Ironing)
- Effective implementation of FuelEU Maritime regulations
- Completion of the Maritime Single Window to cut bureaucracy and boost system interoperability
Schengen and competitiveness
Tsanos underlined the importance of preserving current rules for passenger movement and crew changes ahead of Cyprus joining the Schengen area. He described this as a critical competitive advantage that must be safeguarded.
High-Level attendance
The anniversary event welcomed Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, Deputy Shipping Minister Marina Hadjimanoli, Attorney General George Savvides, Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis, and MP Fotini Tsiridou representing the House of Representatives.
