Cyprus National Guard develops small drones

Date:

The National Guard has acquired the capability to design, develop and produce small unmanned aerial systems, marking another step towards integrating new technologies into the modern operational environment.

National Guard Chief Lieutenant General Emmanouil Theodorou visited the newly established Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAV/FPV) Production Laboratory at the 12th Technical Battalion, where he was briefed on the National Guard’s ability to develop and produce unmanned systems internally.

The visit also included a presentation of the systems’ potential further development and operational use, at a time when small drones, particularly FPV systems, have gained increasing importance in modern military operations.

Building domestic expertise

According to a National Guard announcement, the new capability represents an important step in its technological and operational transformation, strengthening autonomy, flexibility and the speed with which it can adapt to changing requirements on the modern battlefield.

The development of domestic expertise is considered particularly important, as the laboratory allows the National Guard to develop relevant capabilities internally and explore ways of adapting unmanned systems to its operational requirements.

The laboratory forms part of a broader plan to create a modern, technologically advanced and operationally flexible National Guard, with an emphasis on innovation and developing expertise within Cyprus.

Growing role of FPV systems

The development of small drones is particularly significant in light of lessons from modern armed conflicts, where small UAVs and FPV systems have become an important factor in surveillance, reconnaissance and other operational missions.

The National Guard’s new capability is therefore expected to contribute to its efforts to incorporate emerging technologies and strengthen its ability to respond to the evolving demands of the modern operational environment.
