Cyprus issue among topics discussed by von der Leyen and Erdoğan

Date:

The Cyprus issue was among the topics discussed on Tuesday during a phone call between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In a post on X, von der Leyen said the two also discussed the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus, adding that the European Union is ready to support the United Nations-led process at all stages.

She stressed the importance of EU–Turkey relations, describing Turkey as a key partner in a region marked by instability.

EU highlights cooperation priorities

According to von der Leyen, EU and Turkish interests converge on maintaining open trade routes, ensuring energy flows and keeping supply chains stable.

She added that cooperation will continue on these priorities, while noting that the EU values Turkey’s efforts to support de-escalation and a diplomatic solution to the conflict with Iran.

Call held at Erdogan’s request

According to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), the telephone conversation took place at the request of Erdogan.

The agenda reportedly focused exclusively on the Middle East conflict, the Cyprus issue, efforts to settle, and broader EU–Turkey relations.

The EU has repeatedly stated its readiness to support UN-led efforts aimed at a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.
