Cyprus heatwave and fire risk warnings remain in force

Date:

A Cyprus heatwave warning remains in effect as extreme temperatures continue across the island, with inland areas expected to reach 43°C today. Authorities have also issued a red alert for wildfire risk across all forest areas.

The Meteorological Department’s new orange warning for maximum temperatures is valid from 11:00 to 17:00 on Monday, 11 August. Temperatures are expected to hit 43°C inland, 36°C on the southern and eastern coasts, 34°C on the western and northern coasts, and 34°C in the higher mountains. This marks the third consecutive day under an orange alert.

According to the Meteorological Department, seasonal low pressure and a hot air mass are affecting the region. Today will be mostly clear. Winds will initially be variable and light at 3 Beaufort, gradually becoming mainly south-westerly to north-westerly, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, and strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort in the western coastal areas during the afternoon. The sea will be calm to slightly rough.

Tonight will remain mostly clear, with winds mainly north-westerly, light at 3 Beaufort and locally up to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea will become calm to slightly rough. Temperatures will fall to around 25°C inland and on the northern coast, around 26°C on the remaining coasts, and 22°C in the higher mountains.

On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday the weather will stay mostly clear. Temperatures will remain steady on Tuesday, before rising slightly by Thursday, staying well above the seasonal average, keeping the Cyprus heatwave warning relevant throughout the week.

The Forestry Department has also issued a red alert for wildfire risk, warning that all forest areas are at the highest danger level. In these conditions, even the smallest spark can trigger a blaze. The public is urged to:

  • Avoid lighting barbecues outside designated picnic or camping sites
  • Properly extinguish cigarette butts and avoid smoking in forested or dry grassy areas
  • Refrain from burning garden waste
  • Avoid leaving glass bottles or reflective litter outdoors, as these can focus sunlight and start a fire

Anyone who sees smoke or flames should immediately call 1407 or contact the nearest fire station.
