Cyprus heat hits 36°C, rain possible in mountains

Date:

Cyprus heat continues to intensify, as temperatures soar across the island today, with some relief expected in the mountains as isolated showers and storms develop.

Temperatures are expected to reach 36°C in inland areas on Wednesday, with coastal regions hovering around 32°C and mountain peaks around 29°C.

According to the Department of Meteorology, the weather will remain mostly clear during the day, although low clouds will linger in some areas early on. By the afternoon, increased cloud cover is likely, especially over mountainous terrain, bringing the possibility of isolated showers and even thunderstorms. In storm-affected areas, hail is not ruled out.

Winds will initially be light, blowing from the southeast to southwest at around 3 Beaufort. These will gradually shift to south-westerly to north-westerly, remaining light to moderate at 3–4 Beaufort, and temporarily reaching 5 Beaufort in the south. The sea will be slightly rough.

Tonight, skies will stay mostly clear, though some low cloud is expected to return, particularly in coastal areas. Patchy or even dense fog may form during the early hours. Winds will vary from northwest to northeast, staying light at around 3 Beaufort. The sea will be calm to slightly rough. Overnight temperatures will drop to around 24°C inland and along the coast, and 20°C in the mountains.

Looking ahead, Thursday and Friday will start mostly clear, but localised afternoon cloud development may bring more isolated rain or storms, especially in the mountains and central regions. Hail is once again a possibility in storm-prone areas.

By Saturday, the weather is expected to remain mostly clear, with occasional cloud cover. Cyprus heat will intensify slightly, pushing temperatures above average for the time of year.
