Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Malta join forces on migration

Date:

Migration policy was at the centre of discussions in Rome as Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Malta reaffirmed their shared commitment to tackling irregular migration and strengthening protection of the European Union’s external borders.

According to a social media post by Deputy Minister for Migration and International Protection Nikolas Ioannides, the meeting followed a joint declaration on migration adopted by the leaders of the four countries last April.

Stronger action on irregular migration

Ioannides said the four countries once again expressed their determination to address illegal migration flows through stricter measures and more effective border protection policies.

The ministers reiterated their common approach towards strengthening management of migration challenges facing southern European states and the wider EU.

Measures linked to EU framework

The Deputy Minister noted that related actions will be implemented within the framework of the European Union Pact on Migration and Asylum, as well as the new Returns Regulation.

He added that negotiations on the new regulation concluded during Cyprus’ Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Clear message on border control

“Our message is clear: Member States will decide who enters Europe, not criminal smuggling networks,” Ioannides said.

The statement reflects continued efforts by several EU member states to reinforce migration controls and coordinate policies on external border management.
