Tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean stall the project – Critical decisions in Athens and Ankara

The Cyprus–Greece–Israel electricity interconnection project is now under the microscope of the Turkish Cabinet, as Ankara is reportedly evaluating its next steps in light of developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.

According to Milliyet, rising regional tensions appear to have led Greece to postpone construction of the project.

As reported by the state broadcaster, despite the recent cancellation of the Greek Prime Minister’s visit to Turkey, Athens remains open to dialogue, aiming to maintain a positive climate in Greek-Turkish relations.

Turkey’s stance is expected to be assessed tomorrow at a meeting of Greece’s Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence (KYSEA) in Athens, where the next steps and related timelines will be discussed.

As noted by RIK’s Athens correspondent, Fanis Papathanasiou, the decision to delay exploratory work was deemed necessary, as the Greek government believes that hasty actions which could provoke reactions serve no beneficial purpose. The government concluded that proper groundwork must be laid so that when the resumption of exploratory work is announced, operations can proceed without further delays or setbacks.
